Great Blue Heron

by Carly Warner

Where had you gone?

Your wingspan swallowed the sky

And I mistook you for a red herring

In pond or pool

What other names for blue

The sheen in your neck

To the feather’s edge

Fluttered above a witch's chimney

Arms as long as I am tall

First birdwatch of childhood

Why have you returned?
